Essaouira "the windy city" has been a trading post for almost 3000 years, starting with the Phoenicians but today Essaouira is one of the firm favourites amongst travellers, windsurfers and kitesurfers alike as unlike the big cities of Morocco, it has a much more pleasant pace and artistic flare.
The heart of Essaouira is the Medina (Old Fort). Its maze of narrow cobbled lanes with endless market stalls, spice, rug, leather and jewellery shops, not to mention the coffee and cake shops! Throw in a healthy bowl of Couscous with lime, washed down with sweet mint tea and you`ll come somewhere close to the cultural flavour of Morocco.
Essaouira is truly the windy city of Africa with strong winds year in year out so only for the strong independant rider - see The Kitesurfing pages.
