Tenerife is the largest island in the Canarian archipelago, and as such has the most diverse terrain, from vegetation and rocky coastline of the north to the lunar landscape and sandy beaches of the south.
Based in South Bay of El Médano, Tenerife and open since Christmas 2006 the Shinn Centre offers a completely new concept in kitesurfing holidays. All kiters dream of year round, warm and windy kiting & El Medano, Tenerife can certainly offer that but we've added something new and exciting to a time-honoured dream.
El Medano offers you four diverse sailing areas - flat-water to waves. South Bay, Harbour Wall, Cabezo and La Tejita
The centre has a full range of kites & boards from Shinn & Nobile. Other test brands include North, Naish, Flexifoil, RRD, Ozone, Cabrinha, Slingshot & Airush.
Wind Conditions...
El Medano is home to the infamous Los Alisios trade wind. Los Alisios blows from a NE direction and provides upwards of 80% of the 300 (on average) rideable days in Tenerife each year. Due to local effects the wind in El Medano can be expected to be between 50 to 100% stronger than is forecast. The NE winds provide cross to cross on shore riding conditions with the waves going from non existent to well overhead depending on the swell direction and strength of the wind however the South bay rarely has more than a foot or so of surf making it an easy launch for riders of all level in all conditions.
The trades are at their most reliable during the peak season of May till September when anything less than 7 days on 7 in the water would be considered disappointing. During the winter season the average temperature still reaches 22 degrees and the wind still blows however the direction can be less predictable and some local knowledge can be needed to find the best island spot to ride. For every wind direction Tenerife features a sailing spot.
